About St. Andrew's |
|
St. Andrew’s Church was built in 1889 by
the local Richardson family, with the tower and choir vestry
being added in 1892. Toilets extending from the South Porch were
constructed in 1970 and the South Aisle arcade blocked up in
1974 to form a meeting hall. The kitchen was incorporated into
this area in 1994 and more recently a small office has been
created. This provides the church with good facilities.
St Andrew’s is in the most rural part of
the parish, although it is next to the M606 and very close to
the M62 motorways. The village has much old property but there
has been considerable new housing built over the last few years.
There are a few local shops, including a bakery, computer shop,
pizza take-away, two cafes and a chemist.
The church hosts a weekly Luncheon Club
for elderly community members, a Playgroup (non church), a
church mums and toddler group and regular Saturday coffee
mornings. It also hosts the West Yorkshire Brass for their
weekly practices and a local martial arts group. St. Andrew’s
are also working on the development of a new pastoral care
scheme for church members.
The village of Oakenshaw has one C of E
primary school with which the church is very involved. |
